It May Have Been Disobedience, But I Don't Think it Was Wrong.

Post by Tomarah t'Sei »

I.R.W. Tal Folar
October 18, 2374
Inside the Dominion lines
Near the Okra System

Commander Tomarah t'Sei gripped both armrests of her command chair. The Tal Folar had been a part of one of the first joint operations with the Federation since the Romulan Empire had joined forces with much of the Alpha Quadrant powers to stop the Dominion.

The the attack on the Ketracel White production facility on Darvin V had gone mostly as planned, a success even considering the facility had been severely damaged and would take months before they could return to full capacity.

The success however, contrasted with the staggering losses. Jem'hadar fleet was waiting for them, and ambushed the strike group. Of the twelve Romulan ships that had left Deep Space Nine that morning only three survived... so far. So far as her ship was heavily damaged and they were limited to warp 5.3 and the cloak was damaged, possibly beyond repair.

The Federation had taken even heavier losses with twenty of their original 30 ship fleet would be returning, and the mission commander was returning to base as fast as possible and thus left the Tal Folar far behind.

Typical Vulcan, Tomarah thought to herself. "Needs of the many my foot," she said softly so none of the crew could hear.

"Commander, the enemy fleet is gaining on us," tactical announced from his console.

This is it. All we can do is face death defiantly, she thought to herself. "Transfer power to shields even if it's life support and bring us about."

The warbird slowed and started a one-hundred and eighty degree turn back towards the Jem'hadar ships. Three cold grey insect like fighters closed in on the Tal Folar.

"Shields at 63 percent," the tactical officer reported. Tomarah nodded.

"Commander," Sub-commander Movak, her first officer, sad softly standing next to her. "We cannot hope to win." Movak r'Kar-shala was a young and ambitious woman, and Tomarah didn't dislike her, but she got the distinct feeling Movak was a Tal Shiar operative, and that was both completely unacceptable and completely out of her hands.

"We can't outrun them," Tomarah replied. "Our only option is to fight."

"Spoken like a Klingon," Movak replied.

Tomarah smirked, "I'll not be goaded by." She lowered her voice so that only Movak could hear. With their eyes locked she hissed, "by the Tal Shiar."

Movak's reaction said it all, and Tomarah turned her attention to the viewscreen. The enemy would be in weapons range soon.

USS Denver

"The Jem'hadar has caught up to the Tal Folar," Operations reported.

Rebecca set her coffee cup down and sat up in her seat, "On screen."

The streaking lights from the warp effect switched to see Jem'hadar fighters closing in on a damaged warbird. Twin tails of green plasma streaked back from both of the ship's nacelles.

Standing Rebecca clasped her hands behind her back, "Hail the Hood. Get me Fleet Captain T'vor"

After a moment the Vulcan commander of the operation appeared on screen. "Captain what is it?"

"Sir, one of our allies was unable to keep up and is under attack," she reported.

"We are aware of the situation Ms. Sandoval," T'vol replied.

That almost felt hostile, Rebecca thought. "Sir, I'd like to volunteer to help them."

"Denied," T'Vol replied.

Was that smugness? "May I ask why?"

"The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. I cannot justify risking one ship to save another. Hood out."

The screen switched back to the stars. "Is it just me or does Fleet Captain T'Vol not like you ma'am," Ops remarked.

"He's just doing his job Lieutenant, and I suggest you focus on yours."

"The Romulan's shields are down to 18%," Tactical replied. "One of the fighters is heavily damaged and is venting drive plasma."

"She's putting up one hell of a fight." Rebecca marched to her seat and sat down, "Helm bring us about, and lay in an intercept course maximum warp." She pressed the key on the ship's all call and with a simulated bounds whistle. "Attention crew this is your captain speaking. I am acting in direct violation of my orders. I will not hold it against you if you wish to file a formal complaint or refuse my orders. That is all."

She closed the comm and looked around the bridge. None of the crew made any effort to stand down.

"Weapons ready Captain," tactical announced.

"Approaching the Tal Falor," the helm replied.

"Slow to impluse," Rebecca ordered calmly. "Fire!"

The Denver lanced out with phasers as torpedoes streaked across space destroying one ship and damaging another.

The Romulan Warbird limped away from the battle its hull pock marked and charred.

The Denver banked to the left as the two fighters closed in on the Denver and strafed along the dorsal hull.

"Damage report," Rebecca demanded as she brushed and strand of loose hair out of her face.

"Shields at 44% and falling. Main power is offline." Her Andorian first officer replied helping at tactical.

"Helm, bring us about 141 mark eight."

"Aye ma'am."

"Two more Jem'hadar ships approaching from 01 mark 58," Ops announced a ting of fear in his voice. "We have disabled one of the fighters the other's shields are at 79% and holding."

Another volly from the Jem'hadar shook the ship violently as consoles overloaded and exploded in a shower of sparks.

"Shields down to 28%. Targeting sensors are off-line. Main power is damaged, switching to auxiliary," Ops reported.

"Attack pattern theta!" Rebecca shouted over the cacophony of noise that came with starship combat.

The hull groaned in protest as they plating was strained for the weakened structural integrity field. The Denver rolled and pitched upward as the last of the initial three fighters came into range. The first volley of phaser fire missed, but the second scored directly followed by a full spread of quantum torpedoes that ripped the enemy ship apart.

There wasn't time for celebration as Jem'hadar reinforcements arrived. The Denver was able to avoid the initial attack, but the Jem'hadar were persistent.

"Shields are down, weapons are off line!" Ops exclaimed.

"Nothing else we can do here. Set course for the Federation." Rebecca said as she glanced at the helmsman.

"Warp drive is inoperative. We are venting drive plasma."

Rebecca crossed herself and recited softly, "We beseech You, O Lord, visit this home, and drive far from it all the snares of the enemy." Louder to the crew, "Reroute all power to shields and weapons. Take it from life support."

The ship bucked violently as hull plating tore apart. The distinctive sounds of rapid depresurizaion filled the bridge. And then the whole ship was plunged into darkness and complete silence with the occasional popping of metallic stress fractures.

Standing Rebecca looked hopelessly around and with resignation she announced abandon ship.

The next ten minutes felt like an eternity as they made their way to the escape pods. At the last minute the pod was launched from the stricken ship, just in time to see the Denver engulfed in an uncontrolled matter/antimatter reaction.

Looking out the view port she caught a glimpse of a pair of Klingon birds of prey and one of the Romulan Warbirds from their attack group surround the Jem'hadar fighters and then the battle was over.

The comm chirped to life, "Federation ship, this is General Martok of the Rotarran. You fought like Klingons today!"

"Glad you were here General," Rebecca replied. "Too bad it wasn't a bit sooner, but I do appreciate the help."

Martok laughed, "You fought well Captain. We will help our new Romulan allies beam your crew aboard and escort you back to Deep Space Nice. Rotarran out."

Deep Space Nine
One Week Later

Rebecca sat alone in a somewhat quite corner overlooking Quark's bar. She had a mostly untouched plate of meatloaf sitting before her. In her hand was a PADD. Pressing a button it buzzed and she set it down to pick up a second PADD to read its contents. With a stylus she wrote something into a third PADD.

"Are you Captain Sandoval?" A dispassionate female voice asked.

Looking away from her work stood a Romulan. "I am. What can I do for you Commander."

"My name is Tomarah. I am the commander of the Tal Falor, you saved the lives of my crew and myself."

Rebecca gathered up her mess into a neat pile, "Of course. Have a seat."

Tomarah sat in the seat opposite of Rebecca eyeing her with curiosity. "I wish to thank you for coming to help us. Sorry about your ship."

Rebecca sighed, and crossed her arms, "You're welcome. I glad reinforcements came and gave us enough to evacuate the ship. We didn't lose anyone so that was a miracle in itself. Did you lose any crew?"

"Five," Tomarah said simply, "With another twenty in sickbay recovering."

Rebecca picked up an iced tea and took a sip. "It could have been worse."

"Yes, it could have been." Tomarah produced a silver badge with outstretched wing, and a blue and green enameled seal of the Romulan Star Empire in the center. She slid it to Rebecca. "I spoke to Senetor Cretak and she got it authorized."

Rebecca picked up the badge and examined it critically, "It's beautiful, but what is it?"

"The Order of the Warbird," Tomarah replied. "You are the first non-Romulan to receive it in some time. It takes heroism and self sacrifice to earn it. You're entire crew will be awarded it."

Rebecca was flabbergasted, "I don't know what to say. Thank you."

Tomarah gave a single bob of the head, "You are welcome captain. Saving my life and the life of my crew should not go unnoticed. When will you be getting a new ship?"

Rebecca let out a long sigh, "I disobeyed a direct order. I don't think I'll be getting another ship. I am being court martialed tomorrow. I have no real defense other than it was the right thing to do."

Tomarah nodded in understanding, "I wish you luck Captain. If you need anything let me know."

"Thank you Commander."

Tomarah stood and walked out of the bar disappearing into the crowd.

Julie walked over to the red headed Captain as she sipped her fruity cocktail.

"A Romulan giving an award to a Terran... I must say this war has been full of surprises." Julie said with a smirk as she sat down at the table across from Becca's. "Imagine my shock when I see the name Captain Sandoval and Court Martial show up on the Intelligence network. I'm even more shocked that my husband isn't here to support you already. I wasn't here for you by the way... there's a Klingon that has been acting most dishonorably and the FSS had me come to... handle him. Just finished up a little while ago and thought I'd see if you needed anything. I know we've never quite been the best of friends, but we've got a history and a shared favorite engineer."

"Uh, thanks, but I'm not sure there is much that can be done. Captain T'vol doesn't like me for some reason, and I gave him all the justification. I plan to plead guilty, and let the chips fall where they may. I didn't want to be in this uniform anyway. Was happy spending my time in Colorado and keeping tabs on.... well the who isn't important. Let's just say I have many regrets in my life, and this isn't one of them."

"That's a load of crap and you know it." Julie said and sipped her drink. "You wouldn't have gotten this far if you didn't want to be in that uniform. And T'Vol is a dick. I do hope you at least got a decent defense attorney. Even with a guilty plea. It's war, shit happens." she shrugged her shoulders. "Point is, you're a good officer and a good Commander, your crew seem to think so at least. And the Federation can't afford to lose good ship's Captains. Nick tells me that they're pulling ancient ships out of the mothballs. I wouldn't be shocked if there are 200 year old ships on the line. Hell, if a damn Daedalus class shows up I wouldn't be surprised. Nor would I be shocked if Nick insists on commanding one of those relics at least to the Front. Court Martials aren't the end of the line, Nick was court martialed but they still let him command at least until he delivers them to their 'forever Captains'."

Julie closed her eyes and shook her head. "Bad enough we allied with the Klingons, but the Romulans now... it's like... centuries of hostility and suddenly they're our allies? And when this is over are they still going to be on our side or are they going to try and annex things again to add to their Empires?"

Rebecca shrugged, "I haven't an attorney at all. Ben... uh Captain Sisko offered, but I told him that it was best he stayed out of this one. And I am certain you know the old adage 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend'."

Sipping her tea she set it down carefully. "And in that vein the Klingons have be allies with the Federation for decades... aside from that kerfuffle with the changeling pretending to me Martok. As far as my crew goes... Most of them have already been reassigned. My old XO is taking command of one of those old mothballed ships you spoke of. My Ops and tactical are going to the Saratoga."
