The Winyan

The Jakkara system, was located just twelve light years from Terra Alpha. There was nothing special about it, seven planets orbiting a single G-type main-sequence star. There are four gas giants on the outer orbits, and a single class M planet located squarely in the habitable zone.
The Winyan developed on the third planet, Anpatu. This humanoid species looked very much human or Betazoid. And in truth the only difference was a bony ridge that ran down their spines.
The Winyan knew nothing of the Alliance, the Imperium or Dominus. In fact they didn't know of any life outside their solar system. Many, however, concluded that there had to be life elsewhere amongst the stars. After all it was the height of hubris to think that they were the only intelligent lives in the universe.
A few crazies told stories of violent aliens with foreheads like a walnut or greedy aliens with big ears. No one believed those people. After all the distances between stars made interstellar space travel an impossibility. And there was no way to test the claims. No alien greeting him or himself to Winyan. No wrecked space ship. Nothing, and so the people who had "seen" aliens were generally ridiculed.
Doctor Malra Kranix stared over her notes. She was tall for a woman, but not freakishly so. Her long, straight, silky smooth blonde hair was pulled into a simple ponytail, tied with a ribbon of a cornflower blue. She wore a pair of gold rimmed spectacles and a simple pair of gold stud earrings. The tests had gone very well. Very well indeed.

Captain Lehona Sunstrider of the Terra Alpha Starship Erebus gunted with effort as she slid across the grass with her right arm outstretched.
Smack!
The white ball smacked onto the glove with a satisfying weight. Utilizing her momentum Lehona rolled to one knee and at the same time three the ball as hard as she could to the short stop covering second base.
"Out!" the second base umpire shouted.
Lehona grinned with satisfaction as her team had won 3-2. Trotting up to the dugout her first officer patted her on the back.
"Where did you learn to play baseball?" He asked.
"Believe it or not it has gotten to be a fairly popular sport on Talaria," Lehona replied.
"Narlins never cease to amaze me captain."
"Good," she said with a smirk. "We wouldn't want to be boring like Vulcans or something!"
The first officer laughed.
"Bridge to Sunstrider."
Lehona tapped her communicator, "Go ahead Commander."
"You have recieved a message from Admiral Jovanović."
"Patch it down here Commander."
"Aye captian."
Lehona brought up the holodeck's arch and she pressed the activation button on the screen. "Hello Admiral," she greeted.
The aging Polish officer raised an eyebrow at her, "Lehona, have you been playing baseball?"
"Yes Admiral."
The old man chuckled, "Well, at least we know a bit of Earth's culture will survive even if we don't." Getting back to buisness he face turned serious, "Last night our sensors picked up a sub-space signature coming from the third planet of the Jakkara system."
"The Jakkara system? Jakkara III is inhabited by a pre-warp species. If there was a sub-space signature it could mean they are about to develop warp drive."
"That's a logical conclusion captain. A conclusion that our scientists came to as well. The Alliance has been at a state of conflict since our founding. We don't have a lot of ships capable of long-term scientific study. The Erebus is our best bet. Captain, study their culture, and then make first contact."
"Understood Admiral. Erebus out."
